This is a lottery funded project to design and build a 270 square metre community facility for the residents of Penygarn near Pontypool.
The project started for us in 2004 when we were selected by the Woodlands Field Group to design them a building that would meet all the requirements of the local community.
Our final design is based upon octagons coming together to form a usable space that stands out from the surrounding houses to deliver that wow factor.
The building is a total of 270 square metres with the main hall being a little over 140m2. There is an IT room; a kitchen; an office; a ladies, gents and disabled WC; two store rooms and a large foyer.
Large windows at the front of the building allow natural light to pass through to the hall and foyer, reducing the need for constant lighting.
As well as the building being constructed from sustainable and renewable logs, other environmental concepts are being applied to improve the sustainability of the finished building. A ground source heat pump in the neighbouring playing field will provide enough natural heat for the underfloor heating and supplement the hot water for the building. Rainwater harvesting is to be used for flushing the toilets and urinals.
Work started on the centre on the 14th of August 2008 and is being constructed out of 202mm laminated logs from Finland. The Windows are all triple glazed and the doors double glazed. The roof is covered in Katepal bitumen shingles. For this project we are using sheep's wool for the roof insulation, whichis being supplied by a company in North Wales.
This project represents a milestone for LOG CABIN UK as it is the first contract where we are acting as principle contractor, co-ordinating all other aspects of the build.
