This is our second lottery funded project to build a horticultural centre for a charity called Drive.
We were first approached in January 2004 by Pentan Partnership Architects in Cardiff to bid for and help with design aspects of building a log structure that can be used as a teaching, conference and office facility.
The centre is approximately 115 square metres in size and constructed using 202mm laminated square sawn log. Its layout comprises of two teaching/conference rooms, a kitchen, two offices, three Wcs, a boiler room and a wood store. This cabin was designed and constructed so that the rafters are exposed on the inside which shows off the detailed roof construction very well. Because the kitchen has no external windows we installed a sunpipe to allow natural light into the room - it is very effective!
Again we used Katepal bitumen shingles to cover the exterior of the roof and coted the walls in Osmo woodstain and preservative.
We built as much of this building as possible with a telehandler and then hired in a crane to lay the higher logs and assemble the roof structure. It is definitely the way forward!
