Thatched Log Home, Canterbury

Thatched Log Home, Canterbury

This is the first project that we have submitted to building control. An interesting experience as log buildings are difficult enough to calculate, this has the added complication of a thatched roof!

The client had the plans drawn up by her architect for us to cost out, order and erect. This house is made using 202mm laminated square sawn logs and treated with Osmo woodstain and preservative. The total delivery from Finland was two wagon loads driven down narrow winding Kent country lanes!

The house was constructed using a Telehandler and saw the first introduction of our specialist log builder Kari Mesimaki, a Finnish national that lives in Germany. Kari has worked on log houses for the last 18 years all over Europe and now has set foot in to sunny Blighty!

As stated, this is a two storey log house reaching a height of 6 metres. It has a footplate of 81 square metres and comprises of an open plan kitchen diner, a large sun room lounge, an office, bathroom and utility room all on the ground floor. On the first floor there is a further bathroom and two large bedrooms that have doors opening out on to a balcony above the sun lounge.

This is the first house that we have thatched and I think it works very well with the log construction.
